Water Scarcity and Water Pollution

Like the question about a falling tree in the forest, are there still problems in the world if people never hear about it?

Well, they do that clearly, there is no argument to make. Will anything ever be done about those problems if nobody hears about it?

Not very likely!

In some places in the world it is hard to believe, but water is a problem. No, there is nothing inherently wrong with water as a substance. That would be a much bigger problem because water is essential for life on earth. No, the problem with water is that there is not enough of it or that it is contaminated, either by natural occurrence or by human negligence. In some places in the world with abundant freshwater springs, however, people regard clean water as a matter of course. The problems of water scarcity are evident in some areas in the US and around the world.

Shedding light on these issues, is publicly available published water reports. There are governmental and non-governmental organizations worldwide that study water-related problems. These issues include water availability and water quality, demography and economy and new treatment technology. These bodies take all this information and write about and discuss the challenges related to water in annual water reports. These reports are not always easy to find if you do not know where to look, but they are available.

These assessment reports are intended to spread the word about the state of water in all corners of the world and how it affects people. They also talk about what some cities, communities and organizations are doing to combat water scarcity. These reports also discuss water pollution and how cities, communities and businesses can find their own way to use water responsibly.

The annual reports are intended to inform people around the world on how their own communities can use their water resources sustainably to ensure a safer and cleaner environment for the future.

Main points discussed in the Water Reports:

Sustainable waste water treatment:

A response to water scarcity and  water pollution. The way in which waste water is treated before, during and after treatment by water treatment systems or by water filters for home, so that water can be disinfected, reused and recycled by people to prevent excessive use and contamination of natural freshwater supplies.

Water pollution:

One of the reasons for water  treatment. Surface water sources can be contaminated with solid debris such as waste. Water can also be contaminated with pathogens, minerals or chemicals of an organic or inorganic nature. Pollutants in waterways can damage human health and aquatic and marine ecosystems.

Water scarcity:

The reasoning for sustainable  water treatment. When the demand for water cannot be achieved for physical or economic reasons. Physical water scarcity is the lack of sufficient water resources in the neighborhood of a population. Economic water scarcity is the lack of adequate management of nearby water sources, so that the population has insufficient access.

The World Water Development Report of the United Nations 2018:

The 2018 WWDR’s theme is the benefits of implementing nature-based solutions (NBS). These solutions use the ways in which our environment naturally regulates elements of the water cycle. A nature-based solution can include a spectrum of solutions that are aimed at environmental recovery and conservation. In addition, it can include artificial ecosystems that would use the processes of the natural environment, all applied on a micro or macro scale. Three chapters describe opportunities for solutions based on nature in relation to increasing the availability of water, improving water quality and reducing water-based risks. The fourth chapter of this report provides examples and insights into the implementation of solutions based on nature in different regions of the world. The remaining two chapters assess how NBS can be further deployed and the potential for water treatment and sustainable development.
