Microplastic in water:
Microplastic is classified as particles of any plastic less than 5 mm in size. They started talking about it relatively recently, the first mention of the probability of high toxicity of this pollutant was voiced in the 70s of the last century. Scientists began to work actively on the topic a bit later. Today, the problem is clearly outlined, but given the fact that over the past 70 years, the production of various plastic products in the world has grown more than 50 times, the problem becomes more and more urgent every year.
An ordinary thin plastic bag decomposes for about 100 years, and plastic bottles for drinks can be completely destroyed after more than 200 years.
Microplastic water pollution sources:
Industrial or primary – these are granules act as water filters for home or powders that are applied as abrasives to household chemicals, cosmetics, car tires, paints, etc.
There is evidence that says that 60 to 90% of primary microplastics are washed off the road. For every 1000 kilometers of vehicle motion, about 200 grams of microplastic is allocated, and another 25% is allocated when washing synthetic fabrics, which gradually delaminate into tiny microfibers. Also, particles are often released in the production of plastic products and additives. Small plastic granules are added to cleaners for the abrasive effect, and powdery plastics are also added to cosmetic powders, creams, and toothpaste.
. Another reason is the anti-corrosion coating of ships that contain various plastics. As we wrote above, the consumption of plastics over the past half decade has increased by more than 50 times. This is due to the spread of plastic containers, the replacement of corrosive metal parts of equipment with durable plastics, and the expansion of the range of artificial fabrics. Now the world produces about 380 million tons of polymer materials per year. For almost seventy years from 1950 to 2018, about 6.3 billion tons of plastic were produced in the world, only about 9% were processed, and 12% were sent for incineration. Note that the production of plastic is constantly growing (can be seen in the diagram below), this suggests that the bulk of the plastic on the planet has been produced over the past 20 years.
