Is water free?
True, it is unlikely that in Pakistan tap water will be included in the bill somewhere if you ordered some dish from the menu. In case of refusal or collection of fees, you have every right to decide whether to come here again, whether to recommend this place to friends, and so on, which in the era of different rating portals and mobile applications can ultimately do more harm to the institution than saving on a free glass. However, the inhabitants of Pakistan themselves are more or less accustomed to high prices for mineral water and drinks in restaurants and cafes, as this is partially offset by the average relatively low prices for dishes compared to many other European countries. That is why Pakistanis are using water filters for home to overcome the use of expensive mineral water.
Speaking of Europe. The European Commission in Brussels is just now working on a new directive on drinking water. To reduce the number of plastic bottles, the project proposes to include a clause on the mandatory and free provision of tap water to all customers in public catering establishments. However, in Pakistan, industry representatives reject this idea. Most likely, it will have a recommendatory character in the European Union, but the issue has not yet been finally resolved. The start of the discussion of the relevant directive in the EU is scheduled for autumn 2019.
Mineral-water variety in Pakistan:
If in restaurants and cafes the list of mineral waters is usually limited to two or three names, then in stores in Pakistani things are much more complicated. An assortment may consist of dozens of different items – Pakistan and foreign. However, many families, once choosing their favorite mineral water, buy this water for years or decades, often of some local variety, bottled in the region or somewhere in the neighborhood. Mineral natural drinking water is extracted from aquifers protected from human impact. In the list of certified such waters of Pakistan production, there are almost 830 names. For comparison: about six thousand brands of soft drinks are brewed in Pakistan. The Federal Office for the Protection of Consumer Rights and Food Safety (BVL) is responsible for monitoring and issuing permits for bottling mineral water. The list on the website of this agency indicates the trademark, source name, place of bottling and federal land. Many of these natural mineral waters are offered in three versions – gas-free, medium-carbonated and carbonated. The mineral composition and concentration of various elements are regularly checked and indicated on the labels. All of them are suitable not only for quenching thirst, but also for cooking. With this diversity, it should no longer be surprising that there was a special profession in Pakistan and other countries – the water sommelier.
